Meet a multi-breed seedstock operation running on one set of records

Bringing four breeds, 37 cooperators and 800 cows into one system at NextGen Cattle Co.
NextGen Cattle Co. markets about 800 bulls a year across four breeds, runs a 50,000-head feedyard and its own meat company, and takes in bulls from 37 cooperators. Every one of those pieces generates records, and every breed association wants them in a different format. Breedr gave the operation one place to collect it all - captured on a phone at the chute, in the pasture or at a cooperator's ranch, and submitted clean.
Centralized data across four breeds so records reach each association in the format that association asks for
Ended the double work with treatments and calvings visible to the whole team the moment they happen
Cut hours of office data entry the recording at the chute instead of keying paper notes in at a computer later
Cleaned up whole-herd reporting with an accurate record of every cow, including the day she left and why
Setting up the next generation to succeed
Meet the Kansas team running a multi-breed seedstock program, a 50,000-head feedyard and a meat company on one set of records.
NextGen Cattle Co. is headquartered in Paxico, Kansas, and works across nearly every stage of beef production. The seedstock program markets about 800 bulls a year across four breeds, with roughly 800 cows and 500 bulls on the home place at any time, an embryo transfer recipient herd 20 miles away, and cooperator herds carrying NextGen embryos across the country. Another 37 cooperators send bulls in from as far as California, ranging from five-head outfits to hundred-head programs. The company also runs a feedyard with a one-time capacity of about 50,000 head and its own meat company.
Running four breeds means four sets of expectations. Beefmaster records call for color and polled status; Charolais calls for calf vigor and cow docility. Getting all of it into each association's format was the operation's hardest data problem, and the cooperators made it harder — their record keeping ran from pencil and paper to Google Sheets. On the ranch itself, the team had tried text strings, Google Sheets and writing on a board to keep everyone current. Needless to say, there were inconsistencies in their record keeping.
Today the seedstock team at Paxico has Breedr on their phones and records as they go - cattle worked through the chute, treatments given out in the pasture, cows calving. The recipient herd and the cooperator herds record into the same system, so data arrives daily from several states at once. DNA collection runs through it too: NextGen sends roughly 10,000 genotypes a year between the seedstock operation and the feedyard, scanning EID and tissue sample units straight into the platform. What used to be reconstructed from memory and paper is now recorded the second it happens.
“With Breedr, we’re accurate to a fault. Everybody knows what happened as soon as it happened.”

Breedr System Impact
One Place for the Whole Team
Before Breedr, keeping 800 cows and 500 bulls straight meant text strings, spreadsheets and a board in the shop — and it still left gaps. Animals were treated twice because the first person had no way to say so. Now a treatment, a calving or a pregnancy check is entered where it happens and everyone else can see it. If you come through a pasture behind someone, you already know that cow was treated for pink eye and you can leave her alone.
Captured Where the Work Happens
The data gets captured on a phone that is already in someone's pocket, at the moment the work is done, rather than written on paper and entered at a computer that night. DNA collection runs the same way — NextGen sends about 10,000 genotypes a year, scanning the EID and the tissue sample unit directly into the system. It removes the office hours that used to come with the job, and it removes the paper that used to get lost or rained on.
Clean Records for Four Breed Associations
NextGen's biggest data challenge is that four breeds mean four associations, each wanting different information in a different format. Because records are collected day to day rather than reconstructed later, what goes to the associations is both more complete and more defensible — every entry carries a timestamp the team can point to. Whole-herd reporting has gotten cleaner as well: when a cow leaves, the record shows when and why, instead of the operation paying fees on animals that are long gone.
How the Team Learns the Herd
The record is also how people learn the herd. A ranch hand five months into the job can pull up which cows belong to which calves, what an animal was treated with and when, and the family line behind a mating — knowledge that used to live only with whoever had been there longest. When a question comes up about a particular female, the answer is in her profile rather than in someone's memory.
“I would recommend Breedr to anyone in the industry, not just seedstock or commercial. The customer service has been phenomenal.”
Andrew Bird | Director of Sales and Genetics, NextGen Cattle Co
Meet the folks behind NextGen Cattle Co
Joe Epperly - Chief Genetics Officer
Joe leads genetics across the operation, roughly 800 cows, seven embryo locations and 37 cooperators nationwide, and runs a DNA program of about 10,000 genotypes a year. He decided to implement Breedr after trying to build his own system because he could not find a home for the data. Asked what he likes most about the cattle industry, his answer is the people.
J Holmes - Chief Procurement Officer
J buys the feeder cattle for NextGen's 50,000-head yard, five years into his time at NextGen after 27 years at Tyson. He tracks conversions, gain, health and carcass results and sends that information back to the ranchers who raised the calves, on the principle that the only way NextGen gets better is if they do.
Andrew Bird - Director of Sales and Genetics
Andrew has been with NextGen full time since November 2020 and works across sales and seedstock genetics, including registration and association reporting. He describes Breedr as the easiest platform he has used and credits the support team with being reachable whenever something needs sorting out.
Matthew Hawkins - Ranch Hand
Matthew joined the Paxico crew five months before this interview and learned the herd through the app — which cows belong to which calves, and what each animal was treated with and when. He handles calving records in February and March and logs treatments, dosages and withdrawal dates as he doctors calves.
